Vor drei Jahren war ich 'ne Woche auf Gran Canaria, für umgerechnet $700 - das langte auch; mehr als ein Bett, viel Bier und viel Frau brauchte mein junger Körper nicht .

24.06. 05:15 1st Inn Motel, Rawlins, Wyoming, 2050m

Rawlins war so hässlich, dass mit gestern jede Lust aufs Camping vergangen ist. Da bleibt nur das Motel. Teuer und ebenfalls hässlich, aber immerhin meine eigenen vier Wände für eine Nacht.

Wie geht's weiter? Es warten über hundert Meilen durch das "Great Basin". Klingt schlimm, ist es auch. Keine Berge, kein Wasser, kein gar nix, nur Kuhweiden und Zäune und auf und ab über kleine Hügel, so weit ich das in Erfahrung bringen konnte. Große Freude.

Irgendwo unterwegs muss es etwas abseits der Route einen Brunnen und noch eine andere Wasserstelle geben, leider weiss ich nicht wo. Wenn jemand das in der nächste Stunde noch rausfindet, könnte ich die ein bis zwei Etappen unter Umständen überleben. Suchbegriffe wie "GDMBR", "tour divide", "cue sheet", "water", "great basin" etc könnten weiterhelfen, ich find leider auf die Schnellen nichts. GPS-Koordinaten welcome, please be quick .

Hübscher wird´s in Rawlins nicht. Also schnell fort, hinein in die trostlosen Ebenen von Wyomings "Great Basin".

Bis Wyoming war ich auf einer Mountainbiketour. Aber jetzt?!


Naja, jag ich halt ein bisserl meinen Schatten. Damit kann man sich schon auch ein Weilchen beschäftigen.


Der Highway 287 macht auf fünfzig Kilometern vielleicht drei kleine Richtungsänderungen. Der Rest ist schnurgerade. Aber irgendwie find ich's trotzdem grad ziemlich cool. Verkehr ist keiner, Wind auch noch nicht, und so bleibe ich dem Highway sogar noch ein paar Meilen zusätzlich treu, statt wie die GDMBR schon zuvor auf eine Dirtroad abzubiegen.


Trotz der flachen Gegend befinde ich mich hier direkt auf der Great Divide. Diese flache Schüssel ist demzufolge der "Alpenhauptkamm" der Rocky Mountains?! Scheinbar ist mir die Geographie der USA noch nicht so ganz klar.


Meine verlängerte Straßenfahrt beschert mir ein paar hübsche Sanddünen am Rand...


.. und plötzlich in der Einöde ein paar Trailer und Grandma Mary's Cafe.

Da bleib ich doch ein bisserl und lasse mich mit heissem Kaffee und einem Bacon-Egg-Cheese-Sandwhich von Grandma Mary persönlich verwöhnen. Wenn schon Einöde, dann richtig .

Naja. Die flache Schüssel liegt aber auch recht hoch: ELEV 7174....

Und interessant ist auch noch ein Webfundstück dazu:

Perhaps nowhere in the west are the spaces as wide and open as they are in the 108 miles between Rawlins and Rock Springs. This high desert land (all elevations range upward from 6,000 feet above sea level) is truly the "home where the antelope roam" and, if the skies do just happen to be a bit cloudy all day (a most unusual occurrence), you can almost bet it won't rain. In fact, if much rain did fall, the entire region would turn into a huge lake. The area between Interstate-80 and the distant Green Mountains and Antelope Hills on the skyline to the north form the Great Divide Basin, a "hole" in the Continental Divide that drains to neither ocean, only into itself.
