Betreff: To the directors Andrew Georgiou, Nimesh Kataria, Jean-Briac Perrette and Roanne Weekes
Dear Mr Georgiou, Dear Mr Kataria, Dear Mr Jean-Briac Perrette, Dear Ms Weekes,
As a discovery+ subscriber and avid follower of the UCI Mountainbike Worldcup I have to inform you about my discontent with your coverage of the Crans Montana UCI XCO Worldcup of last Sunday.
During your coverage of the men’s elite race the German national champion Maximilian Brandl suffered a severe crash in a rock garden, right in front of commentator Josh Carlson. His immediate reaction to this crash was characterized neither by empathy nor by awareness for the situation. Instead, he showed joy at what had happened. While I appreciate that immediate judgment-errors may be made during live sport coverage, I feel that in this case your coverage was consumed by sensationalism. This part of the course was known to be high-risk due to all the crashes that had previously happened during course-practice. Carlsons reaction therefore really called for some sort of reflection that I was missing in your coverage.
Furthermore I am disturbed by reports (
https://www.mtb-news.de/news/kontro...-die-strecke-in-crans-montana-zu-gefaehrlich/) that discovery+ pushed the organizers into building these high-risk features. I am calling discovery+ to work together with the UCI to reintroduce the technical delegate in XCO-Worldcups and to properly address safety concerns in course design. Otherwise I will have to cancel my subscription to your service.
After all, I assure you that most mountain bike fans are mountain bikers themselves and know, that “the magic of XCO is the athleticism of the riders”, as Rebecca Handerson said, and not the sensation around high-risk features. The technical and athletic skills of the riders are already apparent and ‘sensational’ enough on courses and features with appropriate safety precautions.
Kind regards,
