Aus für die Print-Ausgabe des Dirt-Magazins: Ausgabe #159 des weltweit gelesenen Dirt Mountainbike Magazins wird die letzte Ausgabe auf Papier sein. Wie das Magazin auf seiner Website mitteilt werden keine weiteren Print-Ausgaben mehr herausgegeben werden und der Fokus ausschließlich auf den Online-Bereich gelegt. Damit steht auch die erst im Jahr 2013 eingeführte Dirt Deutschland vor dem Ende – Ausgabe 014 wird die letzte in deutscher Sprache sein. Von der Einstellung der Print-Titel sind alle Magazine von Factory-Media betroffen.
Das Statement von Mark Rose vom Dirt Magazine dazu:
I’m going to keep this short. This was never going to be easy, but it had to happen one day I guess. Dirt magazine started out as a dream during the summer of 1996… a love affair with all things two wheeled and off-road. The tag line back then was ‘bicycles and dirt action’ and that still remains true, but what we have to tell you is that the printed magazine is no more… Dirt #159 will be our last issue.
I’m not going to go into all the details here, but lets just say that the way we all consume information and news has changed, the internet has affected our lives in so many ways. It is a fact that people don’t buy magazines like they used to, and that advertisers are looking to invest their money in different places and in different ways now. In this current climate Dirt (and all the rest of Factory Media’s titles) as a printed magazine cannot continue. All our time, effort and money will be invested into making Dirt online the best possible offering.
Für viele Leserinnen und Leser hat die Dirt einen gewissen Kult-Status genossen, so dass die Nachricht durchaus überraschend gekommen ist. Zum Thema Zeitschriftensterben gibt es mittlerweile mathematisch basierte Prognosemodelle zur langfristigen Entwicklung der Auflagen (für große Publikationen). Wie lange werden wir in Deutschland noch Print Magazine rund ums Bike lesen können? Für das BIKE-Magazin errechnet sich eine Halbwertszeit von 48 Jahren, das Mountainbike Magazin soll die Halbierung der Auflage zumindest 150 Jahre dauern. Beide scheinen also ein gutes Stück davon entfernt, das gleiche Schicksal wie die Dirt zu ereilen.
