Knapp gings zur Sache auf der ersten großen Etappe des Cape Epic 2024! Auf dem 88 Kilometer langen Teilstück rund um Saronsberg entschieden zwei Sprint die Tageswertung bei den Damen und bei den Herren. In der Gesamtwertung gab es an der Spitze jeweils keine Veränderungen. Georg Egger und Lukas Baum fuhren engagiert, mussten sich aber leider geschlagen geben.

Damen: Ghost zum Zweiten

Anne Terpstra und Nicole Koller haben nach ihrem gestrigen Auftaktsieg auch die erste Etappe des diesjährigen Cape Epic für sich entschieden und damit das orangene Leadertrikot souverän verteidigt. Das niederländisch-schweizerische Duo überquerte nach 4:25:42 Stunden als erstes den Zielstrich – hauchdünn vor Mona Mitterwallner und Candice Lill.

Der Rennverlauf selbst war indes bei weitem nicht so spannend wie das Finale in Saronsberg. Auf den ersten 50 Kilometern der heutigen Etappe neutralisierten sich die Favoritinnen weitestgehend. Ghost, Cannondale, Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne (Sofia Gomez Villafane / Samara Sheppard) und Efficient Infiniti SCB SRAM (Vera Looser / Alexis Skarda) machten gemeinsame Sache und dominierten das Damenfeld in beeindruckender Manier. Doch als es in den zweiten längeren Anstieg des Tages ging, war es zu Ende mit der Harmonie: Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne drückte aufs Gaspedal, Ghost und Cannondale konnten folgen und als Gomez Villafane / Sheppard das Tempo wieder rausnahmen, blieb insbesondere Lill auf dem Gas stehen und hielt das Tempo bis zum Gipfel hoch.

Freude über den zweiten Sieg am zweiten Tag! Nicole Koller und Anne Terpstra zeigten eine starke Leistung am heutigen Montag und verteidigten souverän Orange!

In der Folge setzten sich Ghost und Cannondale an der Spitze ab und machten schließlich den Tagessieg unter sich aus. Aufgrund eines missglückten Sprints der jungen Österreicherin Mitterwallner, schoben sich Terpstra / Koller auf die Eins, dicht gefolgt von dem Cannondale-Duo. Dritte wurde Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne mit fünf Minuten Rückstand.

Es war anders, in Orange zu fahren, aber ich denke, alles in allem haben wir wirklich gute Arbeit geleistet. Wir waren mit Cannondale auf einem sehr ähnlichen Niveau – wir haben am Anfang etwas mehr Arbeit gemacht und sie am Ende. Wir sind zu Beginn unser eigenes Tempo gefahren, dann war Cannondale ziemlich stark, aber am Ende haben wir einen kleinen Vorsprung herausgeholt und hatten ein sehr packendes Finish.

Herren: Egger / Baum drücken aufs Gas und verlieren doch

Georg Egger und Lukas Baum sind sich treu geblieben und haben auf dem ersten lagen Teilstück des Cape Epic 2024 ihre altbewährte „No Pussy“-Taktik angewendet: Vollgas vom Start weg. Die beiden Deutschen wurden für diese mutige Fahrweise heute leider nicht belohnt – am Ende hießen die Tagessieger Wout Alleman und Hans Becking. Egger / Baum kassierten schlussendlich knapp vier Minuten Rückstand.

Doch der Reihe nach: Ein Massensturz auf den ersten Metern wirbelte das Elite-Feld zunächst kräftig durcheinander. Passiert ist dabei glücklicherweise niemanden etwas, doch die Nervosität in der Spitze wurde dadurch nicht geringer. Georg Egger und Lukas Baum hielten sich währenddessen nicht lange mit Taktierereien auf, sondern gingen dann auch gleich aufs Ganze und versuchten ihren Rückstand aus dem Prolog einzudämmen. Speed Company attackierte, die Konkurrenz folgte!

Bei Kilometer 57, dem zweiten langen Anstieg des Tages, übernahm dann allerdings Buff Megamo das Kommando und drückte dem Rennen seinen Stempel auf. Insbesondere Wout Alleman sorgte immer wieder für Tempoverschärfungen, die dazu führten, dass die Spitzengruppe mehr und mehr auseinanderfiel. Hinauf zum Fainti’s Pass – bei Kilometer 69 – konnte schließlich nur noch World Bicycle Relief (Schurter / Fini) folgen, während Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne (Beers / Grotts) leicht den Anschluss verlor. Das Specialized-Duo fuhr aber clever im eigenen Tempo, schaffte nochmals den Anschluss an die Spitze und konnte im Finale fast noch in den Kampf um den Tagessieg eingreifen.

Es blieb jedoch beim Konjunktiv. Auf die Zielgerade gingen nämlich nur zwei Teams: Buff Megamo und World Bicycle Relief – mit dem besseren Ende für das niederländisch-belgische Duo! Begünstigt wurde dieser Triumph sicherlich durch den Kettenriss von Sebastian Fini im Zielsprint, sodass der Däne nicht wirklich in den Kampf um den Sieg eingreifen konnte. Buff Megamo durfte somit jubeln, Schurter und Fini sind sicher auch nicht unzufrieden, schließlich hätte das Malheur auch während der Etappe passieren können und wäre somit deutlich ungünstiger gewesen.

Da wars schon entschieden! Bei Sebastian Fini (im Hintergrund) reißt die Kette im finalen Sprint. Tagessieg Nummer 2 war damit nicht mehr drin für World Bicycle Relief.

Gestern starteten wir mit einem Podiumsplatz und heute, nach etwa 30 km, sagte ich Wout, dass es ein sehr guter Tag für uns werden würde. Wir haben das Tempo gut gehalten und es hat perfekt geklappt – Nino und Sebastian waren aber einfach zu stark, um sie abzuhängen. Aber noch sind es sechs Tage und ich bin überglücklich, bereits zwei Podiumsplätze in der Tasche zu haben.

Georg Egger und Lukas Baum landeten schließlich auf Rang fünf, Simon Stiebjahn und Jakob Hartmann vom Singer Racing Team auf Sieben und Andreas Seewald und Marc Stutzmann auf Platz acht. Bei den Masters holte sich Karl Platt mit seinem Partner Tomás Misser Vilaseca den Tagessieg und verteidigte somit auch souverän die Gesamtführung.

Bei den Damen kam es am Ende zum Showdown zwischen Cannondale und Ghost. Die beiden Teams setzten sich circa 20 Kilometer vor dem Ziel von der Konkurrenz ab und machten den Tagessieg unter sich aus.

    Die Bilder sind richtig nice. Leider ist die Live Übertragung net soo prickelnd. Kommt mir sogar schlechter vor als letztes Jahr. Hab das gefühl es gibt viel mehr abbrüche und Bildunterbrechungen.
